Hazel A. James

----

CENTER POINT — Hazel A. James, 97 of Center Point, passed away at 10:40 a.m. May 23, 2013 at St. Vincent Clay Hospital. She was born Sept. 4, 1915 in Owen County, the daughter of David Edgar Ewbank and Fannie Smith Ewbank.

She graduated from Bowling Green High School. On Dec. 27, 1936, Hazel was united in marriage to Owen L. James. Together, they farmed and raised their family in the Bowling Green area. Hazel was a devoted wife and mother. She worked tirelessly on the farm, helping with the vegetable garden, raising chickens, hogs, cows, horses and any other work that needed attending to. In later years, she worked as a telephone operator in Center Point and also in Brazil.

Hazel and Owen were active members of the Center Point First United Methodist Church. They sold countless tickets for the chicken noodle dinners held at the church to fund the new fellowship addition. Hazel was a member of the Ladies Aide (WSCS) and the Alpha Class women’s group at the church. She was well-known for her fried chicken, noodles and, of course, homemade pies and yeast rolls. Her family formed the singing group known as the “James Family Singers.” While she didn’t perform with the group, she organized the refreshments for everyone and was the support team. She also found joy in tending to her flower garden and her unique collection of African violets that she treasured.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Owen James, on April 3, 2004; an infant sister, Mildred Mae; two brothers, Harley Ewbanks and Herbert “Bud” Ewbanks; and one grandson, James Heffner.

Survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law, Myrna and Joe Heffner of Center Point and Myna Eaglin-Sharp and husband Thomas of Knightsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Myron and Sharon James of Clay City; eight grandchildren, Marty Heffner and wife Chris, Marlon Heffner and wife Tina, John Owen James and wife Michele, Jeana Wellman and husband Glen, Janeece Stringer, Rebecca Keidel and husband Jason, Aaron James and wife Erin, Daniel Laughlin Eaglin; great-grandchildren, Austin James Heffner and wife Trudy, Mallory Jenkins and husband Nathan, Meredith Heffner, Ian Heffner, Orry Heffner, Quinton Heffner, Michael James, Vincent James, Jamie Ward and husband Jonathan, Jessica Lowe and husband Jesse, Dallas Graham, Lacey Graham, Jerett Stringer, Lucas Keidel, Colton Keidel, Brody Keidel and Owen James; great-great-grandchildren, Jayda Ward, Jaylyn Ward, Hayden Lowe, Amos Lee Jenkins, and Taylor Jacobs; and nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at French Funeral Home and again Tuesday at the church one hour before services. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Center Point United Methodist Church, Missions Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
