Larry ‘Joe’ Martin

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Larry “Joe” Martin, 68, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 4:24 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, in Union Hospital. He retired as a railroader after 40 years of service beginning with the Pennsylvania Railroad and continuing with Penn Central, Conrail, and CSX. He was born Dec. 26, 1945, in Terre Haute, to Richard R. “Bus” Martin and Emma Mae Hodges Martin.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Carol Ann Rogers Martin, whom he married on May 15, 1965, in Terre Haute; their three children, Larry Joe “Marty” Martin Jr. and his companion Anita Worth of Martinsville, Ind., Bryan “B.K.” Martin of West Terre Haute, and Angel Jones and her husband Ed of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Cody Joe Martin, Haley Paige Martin, Lindsey Jones, and Cameron Jones; a sister-in-law, Mary Davis and husband Lyle; a very close nephew, Steve Byrley, whom he thought of as a son; and other special nephews and nieces; and his very very close friend and K-9 companion Toby, his yellow Lab.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam Era. Joe has always been a drag racing enthusiast and also an avid sports enthusiast. He had been a basketball coach at the West Vigo Community Center for 15 years. During this time he was more than just a coach. He truly cared about the kids in the community and made it possible for them to participate by often times being the one to transport them to and from home for practices and games so they were able to be part of his team. He was proud of the fact that he was a member of the West Vigo High School class of 1964, which was the first class to go all four years there. He served on a committee that made the decision on the school mascot and for them to be known as the Vikings. He was a strong supporter of West Vigo athletics and was known to be a very vocal person in the stands, especially at basketball games. The players loved it, the referees not so much. He also loved drag racing. He was a member of the Wabash Valley Drag Racing Association for many years, had built many street rods, and loved his ’69 Chevelle. He was known as a gearhead by his friends. Joe had a vibrant personality and never met a stranger. He served as the announcer for the Terre Haute action dragway in Terre Haute for several years. Always being a kidder, he loved to razz people, especially his buddies, and he was known to do that from the announcer’s stand over the microphone. Most of all, Joe loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

A Celebration of his Life will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, with a service at 7 p.m., with the Rev. Aaron Wheaton officiating. According to his wishes, cremation was chosen. The family kindly suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association with envelopes available in the funeral home.
