Juanita Marie Schonert

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Juanita Marie Schonert, 87, of West Terre Haute, and formerly of Champaign, Ill., passed away at 1:08 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She had been employed with Illinois Bell Telephone and retired as a telephone operator from the telecommunications department of the University of Illinois after many years of service. She was born Oct. 2, 1926, in Pesotum, Ill., to Hiram O’Bryan and Alma Kemper O’Bryan. Following the death of her parents at an early age, she was raised by her grandparents, Dr. Sherid and Belle O’Bryan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Ernest Schonert, whom she married in May of 1950. Survivors include her two sons, Rick C. Schonert and his wife LaDonna Kay Schonert of West Terre Haute and Lynn R. Schonert of Juneau, Alaska; six grandchildren, Amy Millsaps and her husband Josh, Sherid Schonert and his wife Sara, Ron Shannon, Terissa Ripberger and her husband Doug, Andy Shannon and his fiancé Michele, and Amanda Williams and her fiancé Zack; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Elsie Stultz of Terre Haute, Grace Samford, Louise Schmidt, and Virginia Reynolds, all of Champaign; and Gwen, Tina, and Jennifer from Visiting Nurses Association with Hospice of the Wabash Valley. She also was preceded in death by her siblings, Colleen Gregg, Erma Woodworth, Gene O’Bryan, Bob O’Bryan and Mary Ellen Reeder.

Juanita lived most of her life in Champaign and recently moved to West Terre Haute to be with her family. She had suffered with Parkinsons Disease for 20 years. She was an expert crocheter and made many table clothes and doilies. She also was an  expert gardener and loved working in her large flower gardens. She also enjoyed doing oil paintings of many nature scenes on canvas and to go yard saling. Lastly, she loved to do crafts and attended many craft fairs, where she got many ideas which she loved to share with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Parkville E.U.B. Church, where she was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher.

Funeral services for Juanita will be 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, West Terre Haute, with Dr. Dan Willis officiating. Cremation has been scheduled after all services with burial of her ashes at Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana, Ill., at a later date. Visitation will be 3 p.m. until service time Saturday. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley Visiting Nursing Association.
