Edward C. Payton

ROSEDALE — Edward C. Payton, of Rosedale, died at 2:14 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Cobblestone Crossings in Terre Haute. He was born May 5, 1930, in Jessup, Ind., to Paul L. Payton and Lillie Smith Payton.

His wife of 63 years, Marilyn Mitchell Payton, whom he married Dec. 16, 1950, survives and was the love of his life. He was a beloved “Uncle Eddie” to his many nieces and nephews and a wonderful husband and father.

Also surviving are daughter, Teresa and son-in-law Bill Russell of Lexington, N.C.; brother, Dale Payton of Foley, Ala.; and sisters, Donnie Carrier of Indianapolis and Mae Grinley of Rockville. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George, Quentin and Donald; and sisters, Marilyn Clark and Juanita Jaggers.

Ed and Marilyn operated the Mitchell House and Fred’s Place in Bridgeton during the Covered Bridge Festival for several years, where they enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, eventually retiring from Conrail. He loved his job and looked forward to getting up and going to work every day and he was highly regarded by his employers and coworkers. He enjoyed visiting railroad museums and collecting memorabilia. He served with the U.S. Army in Japan after World War II. Ed was a member of Friendly Grove Church, where he served as deacon.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, at Cottrell-Gooch Funeral Home, 287 N. Main St., in Rosedale, with the Rev. Perry Mager officiating. Burial will follow in Clear Run Cemetery, in Bridgeton. Visitation is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Gentiva Hospice, 3401 S. 4th St., Terre Haute, IN 47802 or Friendly Grove Church, P.O. Box 204, Rosedale, IN 47874 in his memory.

Ed said that he didn’t want his obituary to be “rosy,” but those who loved him think it should all be “rosy.”
