Opal M. Bolin

CASEY, Ill. — Opal Marie Bolin, 93, of Casey, went home on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at Casey Health Care Center, in Casey. She was born the seventh of 18 children on Nov. 2, 1920, in Terre Haute, Ind., to James Joseph McGrew and Maude Gladys (Nail) McGrew. The family resided in the Twelve Points area of Terre Haute as she grew up. She married Everett Edward Bolin Sr. on July 29, 1939, in Terre Haute, Ind. They moved to Casey, Ill., in 1955, where they made their home. Everett passed away on March 2, 1996.

Her family was the love of her life. She loved working at home and in her garden, always willing to work alongside Everett, doing whatever needed to be done. Every now and then, you could catch her dancing and singing as she did her work. She loved to play games, especially cards (with rules according to Opal), with her grandchildren. She would love to tell childhood stories of being raised in a family of 18 brothers and sisters and wouldn’t have it any other way. She loved painting, tap dancing, gardening and floral arranging. She was a decorator and a lover of music. When asked to describe her, people used words such as “loving and sweet, yet feisty and full of spunk.” She was a beautiful soul, and she will be greatly missed.

Opal’s faith in God sustained her through her life’s journey. She loved to share how she loved her Savior. She belonged to the Moriah Church of God. She was a former Sunday school teacher and a former Girl Scout leader.

She is survived by her sons, Ed Bolin Jr. (Judy) of Casey, and Frank Bolin of Greenup, Ill.; daughters, Sharon (Ray) Finney of Greenup, Ill., Dianna (Eddie) Hammond of Sullivan, Ind., and Darla (Fred) Hammond of Casey, Ill.; 14 grandchildren, Kim (Bryan) Stewart, Rod (Julie) Finney, Jim (Diane) Bolin, Troy (Laura) Bolin, Stacy (Steve) Hollis, Joshua Hammond, Sonja (Tony) Tedrick, Rhonda (Nick) Goeckner, Dan Hammond, Cory Bolin, Jennifer (Wes) Richards, Chris (Joe) Hickox, Mariah Bolin and Zach Bolin; 31 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; three brothers, Darrell McGrew of Terre Haute, Ind., Leroy McGrew of Portland, Ore., and Don (Rose) McGrew of Fossil, Ore.; four sisters, Lillian Guthrie of Las Vegas, Nev., Mary Ann Freels of Albany, Ga., Evelyn Mitchell of South Dakota and Betty Cook (Paul) of Terre Haute, Ind.

Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Everett (Ed) Bolin Sr.; three sons, Danny Lee Bolin, Lee Edward Bolin and Kenneth Ray Bolin; one daughter, Carol Sue Bolin; brothers, George, Woody, Jim, David, Richard, Bill and Larry; sisters, Helen, Ruby and Edna; and her parents, James and Maude (Nail) McGrew.

A celebration of her life will be at 1 p.m. CDT on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Markwell Funeral Home, 200 N. Central Ave., in Casey, with the Rev. Eddie Hammond officiating. Burial will follow in Casey Cumberland Cemetery, in Casey. Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Casey Senior Social Center, 14 S. Central Ave., Casey, IL 62420. To view the full obituary, send a condolence message, light a candle or post photos, visit:
