Charles S. Shelby

CLAY CITY — Charles S. Shelby, 72, of Clay City, passed away Nov. 22, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Indianapolis, with his family by his side.

Chuck was born Nov. 22, 1941, the son of the late Clayborne and Dorothy (Burton) Shelby. He served his country in the United States Navy, where he was a medic. Chuck retired in 2000 from Polyone as a computer analyst, after 35 years of service. He married Elsie Day Jackson on June 21, 2003.

Chuck attended Union Chapel Church of the Nazarene. His passion was playing his guitar, singing and having jam sessions with friends. He loved traveling and spending winters in Arizona with Elsie. His love for his family was as strong as his love and faith in God.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Roberta Shelby; his father; and foster father John Walton.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Elsie Shelby; mother, Dorothy Shelby; daughter, Kathleen Jackson (John Pipes); stepdaughter, Donna Klingler (John); stepson, Larry Jackson (Teresa); grandchildren, Christina Tincher (Scot), Jesse Jackson and Angela Gillin (Jamie); step-grandchildren, Jason Klingler (Anna), Julia Myer (Joe), Eric Jackson, Amanda Jackson, Ashley Ross (Adam), Heather Hawkins (Colin) and Alex Jackson; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Phyllis McQueen (Ed) and Sandra Braden; foster mother, Oda Walton; foster brother, Jerome Walton; and foster sister, Henrietta Gabriel; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home,  with Pastor Highlander and the Reverend Sorensen officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of services. Per Chuck’s request, cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Rock, 500 E. 10th St., Clay City, IN 47841 or Clay City Food Pantry, 405 E. 14th St., Clay City, IN. To light a candle in his remembrance visit:
