Harold W. (Pat) Patterson

TERRE HAUTE — Harold W. (Pat) Patterson, 87, passed away June 8, 2014 in his residence. He was born August 3, 1926 in Terre Haute to Robert Patterson and Eva Willison Patterson.

Survivors include wife of 67 years, Doris Blaker Patterson; two daughters, Susan Green and her husband Larry of Florence, South Carolina and Barbara Selge and her husband Paul of Burnesville, Minnesota; one son, David A. Patterson and Jami of Brazil, IN; five grandchildren, Tracy Selge of California, Kara Lewandowski and her husband Craig of Minnesota, Brent Selge of Minnesota, Bryan Brough of South Carolina, and Matthew Patterson of Terre Haute; six great grandchildren, Samuel, Jack, and Ava Lewandowski of Minnesota, Dallas and Austin Selge and Cadence Guenther of Iowa; sisters-in-law, Bea Marchino of Terre Haute and Shirley Hicks of Florida. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Staff Sergeant Todd Willis Selge who was killed in Iraq in 2009; his parents; sister-in-law, Ruby Tyler; and brothers, George Patterson, Jerry Patterson and Clyde Patterson; and sister, Geraldine Patterson.

After the death of his parents at age 2 he was raised in the Chauncey Rose Orphans Home until he was 17. He then enlisted in the Navy in World War II. He was a 3rd Class Boatswain Mate aboard the USS Intrepid CV11. It was the most hit carrier of the war (5 times). He was in eleven major engagements and received the Presidential Citation from President Harry Truman. Harold worked for Newlin-Johnson Company for 14 years and helped build every house in Hulman Meadows as well as helped build three of the four shopping centers in Terre Haute. He then was a self-employed building contractor for 40 years. He loved being a carpenter. Harold built fantastic doll houses after he retired and cut out Santas that his wife painted. He also made Noah’s Arks with all of the animals for all of his grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan. Stan Musial from the St. Louis Cardinals was his favorite baseball player.

Harold was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He was a member of American Legion Wayne Newton Post #346, V.F.W. Post #972, and Carpenters Union Local #133 for over 50 years. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Thursday, June 12, 2014 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Reverend Jimmy Moore officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with Military Services by V.F.W. Post #972. Visitation is scheduled prior to services from 1:00 3:00 P.M. on Thursday. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to American Gold Star Mothers, 2128 Leroy Place, NW, Washington, DC 20008. Funeral information may also be found at:
