TERRE HAUTE — Charles L. “Lefty” Bryan, Sr., 92, of Terre Haute passed away at noon Saturday, June 7, 2014 in Providence Health Care at St. Mary-of-the Woods.  He worked as a supervisor in plating with Columbia Records for thirty years.  Charles was born July 23, 1921 in Fort Worth, Texas to Charles Henry Bryan and Burley Jolly Bryan.  His wife, Philomena “Phyllis” Onorato Bryan preceded him in death on February 19, 2006.

Survivors include his children, Charles L. Bryan, Jr. of Terre Haute, William Bryan and his wife, Nancy, of Dallas, TX and Jean Robson and her husband, Tim, of Terre Haute;  a brother, Lloyd Bryan and his wife, Margie, of Mountain Home, AR;  three grandchildren, Joel Robson and his fiancée, Rebekah Sullivan, William “BJ” Bryan and his wife, Emily, and Dr. Allison Lopez and her husband, Mark;  and many nieces and nephews.

Charles graduated in 1941 from Little Rock High School in Little Rock, AR. He was a United States Army Staff Sergeant veteran of World War II having served as a tank driver and flame thrower instructor in Hawaii.  He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church since 1968 where he and Phyllis taught religious education to first graders. He was also an avid bridge player at the Terre Haute Bridge Center. As a young man Charles would pitch a baseball game for the Little Rock City League after working 17 hours a day. In 1938, as a 16 year old and left handed pitcher, he threw a “no hit no run” game and earned the nickname “Lefty.” He continued to play American Legion baseball and was a lifelong fan of the game.

Charles loved his children and grandchildren and instilled within them a strong work ethic and love of life. On Saturday he joined his loving wife Phyllis in Heaven.
