Robert F. ‘Bob’ Reel

ATHENS, Ill. — Robert F. “Bob” Reel, 83, of Athens, and a former Paris resident, passed away at 6:24 a.m. Sunday, June 8, 2014, at his daughter’s home in Athens. He was a retired and well-known farmer in Edgar County and co-owner and operator of Reel’s Catering Service. He was born Feb. 8, 1931, in Stratton Township, Edgar County, the son of the late Ben and Blanche (David) Reel. He married Darlene Lee “Doll” Helt on Feb. 18, 1955, in Paris. She preceded him in death on April 25, 2011.  

He is survived by his daughters, Julie Stray and Jill Heffernan of Athens; and five grandchildren, Caroline Stray of McHenry, Kacy Stray and Sam Heffernan of Athens, Brian Heffernan of Amherst, Mass., and Caitlin Morla of Bradford, Mass.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and dear friends. He also was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

Mr. Reel served in the Korean War with the Army National Guard from 1951 to 1954. He was a member of Edgar County Farm Bureau, Gideons International and Stratton Lodge 408 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons.

Bob was a graduate of Paris High School and attended Horace Baptist Church. He was also a supporter the Athens Christian Church. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather, faithful uncle and brother-in-law, and jovial friend to many.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. CDT Thursday, June 12, 2014, at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home, in Paris. Masonic services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, prior to the visitation. Services celebrating his life begin at 2 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2014. Burial will follow in Edgar Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 211 and V.F.W. Post 3601. For those who wish, memorials may be made to DOit of Edgar County Cancer Support Group, in care of ECCF, Inc. or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
