Ferris E. Pope

LINTON — Ferris E. Pope, age 91, of Linton, died on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at his residence, surrounded by family. He was born in Linton on May 20, 1923, the first child of Wayne and Alma (Clayton) Pope.

Ferris served in the Army from 1945 to 1947. He was a graduate of the Indiana State Normal School and also attended classes at Purdue University. He taught school for eight years, one  year at Marco, six years at Ellis and one year at Linton. Ferris was a farmer, over the years raising corn, beans, sheep, hogs and cattle. He owned and operated a grain mill and elevator. He and his wife established Pope Bros. Home Center in 1968 and operated it until 2007.

He was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church for 83 years, where he served as deacon, sang tenor in the choir and taught the Friendship Sunday school class for over 50 years.

He is survived by his three daughters, Janet Ann (Jim) Townsley of Southington, Conn., Linda Sue (Jim) Hert of Dugger and Connie Lou (George) Ralston of Terre Haute; two brothers, Warren (Betty) Pope of Beech Grove and Donald W. (Jean) Pope of Linton; a sister, Barbara (Jack) Jerrells of Linton; eight grandchildren, David (Annette) Townsley, Jonathan (Tracy) Townsley, Elizabeth (Barney) Schwanke, Sarah (Paul) Johnson, Dr. Michael (Holly) Gamble, Daniel (Marci) Gamble, Philip Ralston and Christina (Jeff) Cantrell; and 19 great-grandchildren, James, Esther, John, Joy and Mary Townsley; Olivia and Anna Townsley; Emma and Isaac Schwanke; Timothy, Karen and Ethan Johnson; Japheth, Baylee and Bella Gamble; Abbi and Spencer Gamble; and Audrey and Parker Cantrell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred (Wood) Pope, on Feb. 15, 2008; and a step-granddaughter, Bridget Hert.

The funeral service will be at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014, with Pastor Jim Townsley, his son-in-law, officiating.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home.
