Peter Lafko

TERRE HAUTE — The Rev. Peter Lafko, of McCordsville and formerly of Terre Haute, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 11, 2014, surrounded by his family. Peter was born Feb. 10, 1916, in West Virginia, to Ukrainian parents Paul and Pearl Lafko. He was raised in the small coal mining town of Helvetia, Pa., where he met and married Willet (Larsen) Lafko, his wife of 72 years. After graduating from Luthersburg High School, he worked as a coal miner alongside his father and brother. He later worked in a car manufacturing plant and as a farmer before earning his seminary degree and becoming a pastor. “Pastor Pete” faithfully served as a United Methodist minister in Monroe City, Welton Chapel, Reels Chapel, Hamlin Chapel, Prairie Creek, Pimento, Fletcher Chapel, Ashboro, Center Point, West Terre Haute, and Lewis. In that time he shared the love of Christ with hundreds of parishioners. He loved his congregations, and enjoyed his years as their pastor.

In his free time, Pete enjoyed gardening, bowling, spending time with his family, and following his beloved Yankees and Indiana University Hoosiers.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Willet; a daughter, Darlene Douglas; a son, Peter Lafko Jr.; his parents; three brothers, Joseph Lefko, Paul Lefko, and Max Lefko; and one sister, Mary Lefko.

Pete is survived by his son, Robert Lafko and wife Andrea of New Albany; his daughter, Bodonna Hale and husband Herb of McCordsville; his brother, John Lefko and wife Julie of Florida; his sister, Matilda (Tika) Antos and husband Joseph; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 14, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. in DeBaun Funeral Home, Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with funeral services on Thursday, May 15, 2014, at 2 p.m., with Pastors Aaron Wheaton and Dave Galbraith officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.
