Emma Lee Phillips

TERRE HAUTE — Emma Lee Phillips went home Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, to be with the Lord. He opened His arms and said “Servant well done.” Emma Lee was born June 9, 1934, in Cerulean, Ky. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Ethel Hayes Phillips.

Emma Lee accepted Christ as her personal Savior at a very early age. She was a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church in Cerulean, Ky. After moving from Cerulean, to Terre Haute, Ind., she became a member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. After moving to Indianapolis, she became a member of Little Egypt Baptist Church, which was later named Greater St. Matthew.

Emma Lee and Isaac Nance fell in love and a daughter, Shirley Marie Nance was born to that union. Emma Lee loved the Lord and her church members. She loved to walk and sing. She was a compassionate and loving person. She really loved to hear others sing.

Emma Lee was employed at Methodist Hospital for 10 years and Indianapolis Public Schools for 24 years. She enjoyed her work.

Emma Lee was preceded in death by her brother, Samuel Phillips; and sister, Ada Thompson. Emma leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Shirley Settles; sister, Jeanette Smith (Floyd) of Terre Haute; sister-in-law, Mary E. Phillips of Cerulean; four special grandchildren, Courtney, Korie, Jamia and James; two special cousins, Flossie McClendon and Estella McGowan; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church, 2501 E. 30th St., Indianapolis, with Pastor Johnny Douglas, Eulogist. Viewing will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Memorial services 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Mt. Pilgrim MBC, 1935 Tippecanoe St., in Terre Haute. Internment will be at 10 a.m. in Grandview Cemetery on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013.
