Sister Agnes Eileen O’Brien, 97, of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Sister was born in Chicago, on May 20, 1915, to John J. O’Brien and Ellen Early O’Brien and was baptized Eileen Nora.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Aug. 21, 1933, and professed Final Vows Jan. 23, 1941. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from Ball State University. In her 79 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister ministered as teacher for 38 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Oklahoma, California and Missouri. In 1974 she retired from teaching. She joined the health care staff at the Motherhouse and helped begin the physical therapy program there. In 1982, she returned to the Chicago area, where she served as an office assistant at Mother Theodore Guerin High School in River Grove, Ill. In 1989, she returned to the motherhouse, continuing to serve her sisters with a loving and generous spirit. Beginning in 1994, she totally dedicated herself to the ministry of prayer.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary O’Brien Hill.
The wake is on Monday, April 1, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial is Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
