John Oscar Haddix

PARIS, ILL. — PARIS, Ill. — John Oscar Haddix, 80, of Paris, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at his residence. He was born April 13, 1932, in Paris, the son of the late John and Elsie (Terrell) Haddix. He married Kay Payne on Jan. 24, 1958, in Vermilion, Ill., and she survives.

Survivors include three sons, John Dirk (Michelle), Tim, and Jeff Haddix; seven grandchildren, Jordan (Cierra), Kelsey, Ryan, Whitney, Taylor, Yancee, and Oakley Haddix; one great-granddaughter, Carsten Haddix; and a sister, Joan Sullivan, all of Paris. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jerri McCord and Jackie Mullis; and a brother, Mike Haddix.

John was a longtime member of Otterbein United Methodist Church of Paris, where he held many offices and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a member of American Legion Post 211 and National Rifle Association. He served in the U. S. Army National Guard's 1544th Transportation Company and was activated close to the end of the Korean War. He stayed in the Guard until 1960. He was employed for 32 years on the New York Central, Penn Central, and then Conrail Railroad. After retired, he volunteered at Compassionate Food Pantry and shortly after was named Executive Director, a position he held for over 21 years.

In 1996, he was awarded the Chamber of Commerce Parisian Award, and in 2012, was named Volunteer of the Month by Compassionate Food Pantry. He was the Honorary Grand Marshall for 2012 Honeybee Festival parade.

He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren, of whom he was very proud. He loved to golf, garden and work on his farm.

For those who wish, the family suggests that memorials be made to Otterbein United Methodist Church or Compassionate Food Pantry of Paris.

Services celebrating his life will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Templeton Funeral Home in Paris, with Pastor Don Shane officiating. Burial will follow in Edgar Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Online condolences at:
