Katherine Cowden

TERRE HAUTE — Katherine Cowden, 95, formerly of Lewis, went to be with the Lord at 5:36 p.m. on Thursday Oct. 7, 2010, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Sullivan after a long illness. Born Aug. 16, 1915, in Prairie Creek, she was the daughter of Samuel R. and Clementine (Stranahan) Burnam. On July 28, 1938, she married Wayne E. Cowden, who passed away Oct. 8, 1997 after 59 years of marriage. She worked several places including Glass-Co. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Terre Haute; she had a love for her pets, all kinds, and flowers, and crafts.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Gussie Stranahan, Estele “Red” and Austin Burnam; one sister: Elenor Heinzlemann; three daughters: Darla Cowden, Joy Ann Salesman, and Deborah Cooksey, and a great-great-granddaughter: Tequilla Katlyn Ruff.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicki French and husband Dale of Terre Haute and Judy Drake and husband Jerry of Jasonville; one son, Jerry W. Cowden and wife Brenda of Sullivan; 12 grandchildren, Darla Jenkins and husband Brian of Sullivan, Pamela Wildin and husband Sonny of Vicksburg, Rose Blanton and husband Scott, Tanya Salesman, Dennis Salesman and wife Rhonda, Gary D. Stevenson and wife Nikki all of Jasonville, Troy D. Cowden of Hymera, Jerry Cowden, Jr. and wife Jamie of Centerpoint, Angela Cowden, Michelle Lawson and husband Greg, and Angel Dawn Craig, all of Terre Haute, and Terry Stevenson and wife Neomia of Linton; 23 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday Oct. 11, 2010, in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Dr. Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 12, 2010, in the funeral home. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery. If friends so desire, the family suggests the memorial contribution may be made to the Terre Haute Humane Society, 1811 S. Fruitridge Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47803.
