Sister Ann Francis Hammersley

Sister Ann Francis Hammersley, 87, of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died at 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on Jan. 25, 1927, in Malden, Mass., to Vernon and Gertrude Carragher Hammersley, and was baptized Dorothy Gertrude.

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1947, and professed Final Vows on Jan. 23, 1955. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from the University of New Hampshire.

In her 66 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as a primary teacher for 45 years in schools in Indiana, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and Maryland. On retiring from teaching, she came to the Motherhouse and gave nine years of service to Woods Day Care/Pre-School. Beginning in 2006, she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer.

Sister Ann Francis exhibited a gentle spirit. Both her sisters and her young students benefited from her loving, patient ways.

She is survived by three brothers, Richard Hammersley of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; Edward Hammersley of Bradenton, Fla.; and Arnold Hammersley of Malden, Mass. She was preceded in death by a brother, Francis Hammersley.

The wake will be from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial will be in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. DeBaun Funeral Home - Wabash Avenue Chapel assisted with arrangements.
