CLAY COUNTY — Calvin Clay Swank, 89, lifelong resident of Clay County, died Sept. 1, 2013, at Exceptional Living Center. Calvin was born Dec. 5, 1923, the son of Ray and Susan (Crafton) Swank. Calvin graduated from Ashboro High School with the class of 1942. He married Thelma Knox on Jan. 9, 1954. Most of his life he spent farming. In his years of retirement, he owned and operated a portable sawmill, which he enjoyed very much. He also enjoyed fishing, his pets, and reading.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Susan Swank; brother, Wesley Swank; a sister, Marjorie Waldbieser; son-in-law, Mark Graham; and a grandson, Andy Oliveira.
Calvin is survived by his wife, Thelma Swank; two daughters, Carol Graham of Clay City and Karen Barnhart and husband Darrel of Center Point; a son, Ken Swank and wife Gwynn of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, Brian (Melissa) Graham, Brad (Alana) Graham, Troy (Lindsey) Oliveira, Tracy (Matt) Pattengale, Steven Swank, Michael Swank, and Daniel Swank; four great-grandkids, Austin Graham, Jordan Graham, Jacey Graham, and Adalyn Pattengale; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 E. Eighth St., in Clay City, Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Myron James officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, in Bowling Green, Ind. Visitation will be at the funeral home, Tuesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. To light a candle in his memory, visit:
