Berlyn Everett Perkins

Berlyn Everett Perkins, 80, of Terre Haute died on Monday, August 26, 2013, in Southwood Nursing Home, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was born May 11, 1933, in rural West Terre Haute to Everett B. Perkins and Elsie Webster Perkins. Berlyn retired from Public Service Indiana and then became owner and operator of Perkins Pools.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janet; his daughter, Kim and her son Ryan; his son, Jeff and his daughter Emily; his son, Jay and his wife Cindy and their children, Adam and his wife Ashlee, Tatum, and Taylor; also his beloved great-grandchildren, AJ, Alyse, and Blakely. Berlyn is also survived by his brother, Eugene and his wife Virginia; his sister, Carolyn Stewart and her husband John; and his brother-in-law, Gary Hoare and his wife Joyce. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herman and Ruth Hoare; a niece, Elaine Campbell; and a nephew, Ryan Hoare.

Berlyn was a graduate of Concannon High School where he excelled in athletics, earning 15 varsity letters. Before serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, he was drafted by a major league baseball team. He had an infectious smile, a whimsical sense of humor and just loved to make people laugh.  He was an avid I.U. basketball fan. Berlyn was a past president of the German Oberlandler Club, Terre Haute Lions Club, and the Concannon Alumni Association.  His most special times were when his family was gathered with him around the swimming pool. He was in complete agreement with Martin Luther's quote, “If we are not allowed to laugh in Heaven, I don't want to go there.”

Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p.m., today, August 30, 2013 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, Terre Haute, IN with Reverend Andy Fishback officiating.
