George R. Cusick

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill., — George R. Cusick, 90, of Mount Carmel, Ill., passed away Monday, April 7, 2014, at his residence. He was born in Wabash County, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 1924, the son of Noble and Bertine Cusick. He was named for his great-grandfather, Robert George Cusick, a Civil War veteran.

George was employed as an agricultural teacher for six years in Wabash and Lawrence counties in the veterans on-the-job training program for farmers. George farmed for several years and in 1960 was employed as county executive director for the Wabash County ASC Committee. He retired from that position in 1985, after 25 years of service. George was a member of the First Christian Church of Allendale, Ill., and became a member of Mount Carmel First Christian Church Disciples of Christ when he moved to Mount Carmel. He served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, elder, trustee, and member of the official church board. In George’s Bible you will find Luke 22:14-20, The Last Supper, underlined. Remembering what Christ did for him was the most important thing in his life. He was a member of Allendale Ruritan Club, Ruritan National Foundation board member, Illiana Ruritan member, Founding member of the Allendale Rural Fire Protection District, past director and served a two-year term as president of Illinois Association of Fire Protection Districts. George’s hobbies included farming, playing the organ by ear, church activities, camping, and traveling.  

He married Pearl (Winter) Cusick on May 16, 1945. They were married for 55 years until she preceded him in death. George and Mary Ellen (Greenwood) Powell-Cusick married on June 28, 2003.  

George is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; two sons, Robert and wife Connie Cusick of Allendale, John and wife Linda of Allendale; stepson, Barry and wife Harriet Powell of Terre Haute, Ind.; stepdaughter, Susan Whitehead of Hymera, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, Amy and husband Mike Neikirk, Becky and husband Andy Lane, Chris and wife Kristi Cusick, Jeremy Cusick, Sarah and husband Frank Richards, Barry and wife Sabine Powell, Kathy and husband Jim Jerse, Jill and husband Phil Fernandez, Brian and wife Karen Powell, Chris and wife Heidi Whitehead, Michael and wife Kim Rink; 22 great-grandchildren, Cathrine Neikirk, Brock, Ashton, and Bryce Lane, Kinze, Chandler and Chloe Cusick, Steve, Johnny, Jackson, and Paisley Cusick, Logan and Kristen Richards, Jonas and Lucy Powell, Karalee Jerse, Matthew Fernandez, Dillon Powell, Nathan and Ariel Whitehead, Madalyn and Camden Rink.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Alice Louise Cusick.

There will be a visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the chapel of Short Funeral Home, 527 N. Mulberry St., in Mount Carmel. His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial to follow at Allendale Cemetery, in Allendale, Ill.
