George L. Merchant Jr., died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012. George attended St. Patrick grade school and graduated from Gerstmeyer High School class of 1953. He graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and Indiana State University with a bachelor of science degree in Recreation. George also graduated from the Fire Academy in Emmetsburg, Md.
During his working years George had been employed by the Vigo County Prosecutors Office, ISU Police Department, and retired from Hulman Field Police Department. George’s memberships included a life membership in the Marine Corps League, Joseph A. Bray Det., having served as Commandant for two years. Other memberships also included American Legion Post 104, Forty & Eight Voiture 107, and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 85.
George is survived by Linn Michael of West Terre Haute; brother, Joe Merchant and his wife Laurie of Oakland City, Ind.; nieces, Michelle Stadler Brenner and her husband Ron of Dickson, Tenn., Monique Stadler Grizzell and her husband Dallas of West Frankfort, Ill., and Lisa Merchant Pressler and her husband Jason of Indianapolis; nephew, Jason Merchant and his wife Brittany of Indianapolis; and several great-nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents George L. Merchant and Elizabeth Merchant; sister, Betty Stadler; and nephew, Ty Marc Stadler.
Arrangements have been handled by Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave. No visitation will be held prior to cremation. A celebration of life ceremony will be on Nov. 3, 2012, from 1 until 4 p.m. at American Legion Post 104, 2690 Fort Harrison Road, in Terre Haute.
