Charles A. Tackett

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Charles A. Tackett, 86, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 9:05 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He had worked for 25 years as a member with both the Laborers International Union and Teamsters Union. He then became self-employed in the excavating business for many years before retirement. He was born March 10, 1927, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., to William Monroe Tackett and Myrtle Alfa Willis Tackett. He married Evelyn Maxine Rukes Tackett on Aug. 6, 1949, and she preceded him in death on July 12, 2010.

Charles was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II during which he was stationed in France and Germany.

Survivors include a son, Larry Tackett; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Gary Dunham; three sisters, Ruth Salyer McKinney and Bessie Munds, both of Tampa, Fla., and Virginia Wardle and her husband Bob of New Goshen; a brother, Danny McKinney of Terre Haute; seven grandchildren, David Wilkins, Tina Harden, Dana Edwards, Bill Brock, Greg Price, Doug Wilkins, and Christina Baker; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog, Ginger. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Barbara Brock; a grandchild; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald McKinney, and his twin brother, Cecil B. Tackett, who died on Oct. 2, 2013.

Funeral services for Charles will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute. Burial will be in Bethesda Memorial Park with military graveside rites by Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and prior to services on Monday.
