John Ernest Arnold III

WEST TERRE HAUTE — John Ernest Arnold III, 76, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, in his daughter’s residence in West Terre Haute. He was born Sept. 13, 1937, in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, to John Arnold Jr. and Mary Arnold. He served in the United States Navy from Jan. 13, 1956, to Dec. 8, 1959, on the USS Haley. He married his wife of 56 years, Louise Younger Arnold on Oct. 5, 1957, while serving in the military. After his service to his country, John and Louise moved to Silver Bell, Ariz., where John worked many years in the copper mine in Silver Bell. They moved back to St. Mary-of-the-Woods for a time and John worked at Anaconda Aluminum in Terre Haute for 17 years and then returned back to work in a copper mine in Hurley, N.M., from where he retired and moved back to St. Mary-of-the-Woods to live after retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Younger Arnold; four children, John E. Arnold IV of Fairbanks, Doug Arnold of Tucson, Ariz., Beth Auterson of Houston, and Mary Lu Thralls of West Terre Haute; eight grandchildren, Jonathon Auterson, Sam Arnold, Zachary Thralls, Emily Arnold, Isaiah Thralls, David Auterson, Rachel Lozier, and Kylie Arnold; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ron Arnold and Mark Arnold; three sisters, Maria Heyen, Carol Cummins, and Erna Bird; and special friends, Alex and Becky Brown of New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Andrew Arnold.

He served as a Boy Scout Master for many years both in Arizona and Indiana. He was a member of the St. Mary-of-the-Woods Village Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Mother Theodore Council 541 in Terre Haute, where he was a fourth-degree Knight and had served as the Grand Knight of the Council. John enjoyed volunteering at the Providence Food Pantry in West Terre Haute, bowling, and riding his motorcycle. John and Louise both enjoyed riding and had even spent 28 days riding their motorcycle across the United States. He also enjoyed boating and had sailed around the tip of Florida, but he loved being a Grandpa the best.

Mass of Christian burial for John will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, in St. Mary’s Village Church with Father Stephen Gianini officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., in West Terre Haute with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. Friends are welcome to join the family at the funeral home Thursday morning for a prayer service at 10:30 a.m. and procession to the church for Mass. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley with envelopes available in the funeral home and the church.
