Pauliena L. West

CLAY CITY — Pauliena L. West, 94, of Clay City, passed away at Union Hospital, in Terre Haute, Jan. 11, 2014, following a brief illness. Pauliena was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Clay City, the second oldest of six children of Paul and Edith Riggs.  

She graduated from Clay City High School. Pauliena married Gene West Feb. 5, 1941; he preceded her in death Dec. 5, 1966. While Gene was serving in World War II, Pauliena worked at Link Belt, in Indianapolis, until his return. Together, she and Gene farmed in the Clay County area until his untimely death. Pauliena continued to be involved in farming for many years.

She was a faithful member of Good Hope Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She enjoyed spending time with family and will be remembered as a wonderful cook.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Riggs; sisters-in-law, Elva Riggs, Naomi Riggs and Maxine Riggs; and a nephew, Danny White.

Pauliena is survived by her siblings, Rex Riggs of Coal City, Robert Riggs and wife Pauline of Indianapolis, Jack Riggs and wife Jackie of Coal City, Paunda White and husband James of Clay City; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.  

Visitation will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. Services will be on Thursday, at 11 a.m. with Pastors Bob Dickey and Brad West officiating. Burial will follow at Sink Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Trustees of Sink Cemetery, 047 West County Road 850 South, Clay City, IN 47841.
