Rosemary ‘Mary’ Cornelius

DUGGER — Rosemary “Mary” Cornelius, 82, of Dugger, passed away at 12:09 a.m. on Jan. 4, 2014, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born at home in White County, Ill., on June 5, 1931, to George and Edna (Barbre) Sullivan. Her family later moved to Indiana and she graduated from Union High School in Dugger in 1949. She was a member of Bethel Community Church in Dugger.

She married Augie L. Cornelius on Oct. 12, 1952. When her first child was born a year later, she chose to resign from her job as a phone operator at Bell Telephone in Linton in order to be a stay-at-home wife and mom. She raised her five children and co-raised one of her granddaughters.

She is survived by her children, Owen (Marilyn) Cornelius of Hot Springs, S.D., Jim Cornelius of Titusville, Fla., Mary Ann (Chuck) Guess of Terre Haute, and Jon Cornelius of Dugger; her grandchildren, Sarah (John) Guetterman of Burlington, N.C., Joe (Sarah) Cornelius of Springfield, Ill., Tim Cornelius of Waterloo, Iowa, Erica Cornelius (fiancé Miguel Rodriguez) of Las Vegas, Nev., and Michael Cornelius of Wauchula, Fla.; her great-granddaughter, Makenna Grace Guetterman and Makenna’s sister Elianna Jane who will be born in April; her sister, Patricia A. Horst of Madison, Tenn.; stepsister, Dixie Deiss Goodman of Brooklyn Mich.; sister-in-law, Martha Weber of Fort Wayne; brother-in-law, Art (Violet) Cornelius of Linton; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Augie; a son, Mark Alan Cornelius; her parents; and stepfather, Noble Deiss.

Mary was an accomplished seamstress and crocheted many items throughout her life. She was an avid reader and always had a word search puzzle nearby to work. She loved all things NASCAR and Jeff Gordon. She enjoyed collecting recipes. She had a big heart for animals and loved spending time with her poodles, Sadie and Pippi. Mary was a social butterfly, and was known for her lively sense of humor. She never met a stranger. She will be deeply missed.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at Newkirk’s Funeral Home in Dugger, with the Rev. Kenneth Adams officiating. Graveside services will follow at Dugger Cemetery. Visitation will be today, Jan. 9, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m. and until services on Friday at the funeral home.
