Ray Allen Welsh

MARSHALL, Ill. — Ray Allen Welsh, 83, of Marshall, peacefully passed away at the family home on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014. He was born on the family farm in rural Marshall, on Sept. 27, 1930, to Walter Welsh and Jessie (Dunlap) Welsh, and was the youngest and last surviving of six children.

Ray was the loving husband of Beverly (See) Welsh for 57 years; father to David Welsh (Karen), Terry Welsh (Lisa), and Janet Eitel (Fred) of Marshall, Debbie Hoopingarner (Robert) of Terre Haute, and Gary Welsh of Indianapolis; and grandfather to 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Hubert, Joseph and Robert Welsh; two sisters, Frances Milne and Helen Tingley; and two grandchildren, Joshua Welsh and Brett Eitel.

Ray was a graduate of Marshall High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Ray operated a successful grain and hog farm for more than 50 years before retiring. He was active in the Clark County Pork Producers, Farm Bureau, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Marshall, Armstrong United Methodist Church and served on the Clark County Fair Board. Ray enjoyed everything about the family farm, especially planting and harvest times, enjoyed traveling to the Farm Progress shows and “People to People” tours, playing cards at the American Legion and VFW, eating breakfast with his friends at various Marshall restaurants, and watching his grandchildren play sports.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m. EST and one hour prior to the funeral service at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at 10 a.m. EST at the funeral home. Burial services will take place at Dunlap Cemetery in Dennison, Ill., with military graveside rites provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5975 and American Legion Post 90, both of Marshall. Friends are invited to leave online condolences to the family at fitzpatrick-funeralhome.com. Memorial contributions may be made to the Armstrong United Methodist Church or the American Legion post or VFW in Marshall.
