Sara O. Snyder

SULLIVAN — SULLIVAN — Sara O. Snyder, 89, formerly of Carlisle and Sullivan, joined her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at Riverview Hospital, in Noblesville. She was born Feb. 15, 1924, in Sullivan County, to Pleasant and Blanche (Ford) Shake.

Sara was a member of the Bethlehem Methodist Church in Carlisle and attended the Baptist Church in Sullivan. She was a member of Bethlehem Quilting Circle and the Country Club.

Sara grew up on the farm in the Bethlehem Community, often speaking of hoeing melons in the hot sun by hand. She was a 4-H member in both boys and girls projects, and her hobbies were button collecting, writing pen-pals and horse-back riding.

She graduated from Carlisle High School and Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana State University). Sara briefly taught at Carlisle and Lyons with most of her 30-some years of teaching in Pleasantville and Dugger. She affectionately called her students “HER kids”, and, after retirement, she took great pleasure in telling everyone many stories about them.

“Once a Home Ec teacher, always a Home Ec teacher.” Both Sara and Larry were asked if they would like to help in the McKinley Orchard Country Restaurant, which they did for several years, and where they made many new friends and generated many more stories to be shared in retirement.

Her goal in retirement was to write a book, which guided her into another hobby — genealogy! She was on a mission, going back many generations, searching libraries, courthouses, graveyards, interviewing different family members and calling and writing to people she didn’t even know. The book, “Shaken the Shake Tree”, was published in soft and hard cover with two printings.

After they retired from farming, she and Daddy moved to Sullivan, and she used her newfound genealogy research skills volunteering many hours to help find other peoples’ family history.

She was married to Lawrence L. Snyder for 64 years, until his death in 2011, and they lived on a farm near Carlisle for 47 years, where they raised their two daughters, Nancy and Le Ann. Sara and Larry always had a great garden and shared its bounty with many. As long members of the community, they were always there to help those in need.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Survivors include her daughters, Nancy L. Pigg (and Larry) of Carmel, and Le Ann M. Doll (and Roger) of Fort Wayne; five grandchildren, Steven C. Pigg (and Donna) of Indianapolis, Todd A. Pigg (and Mindy) of Fishers, Amy S. Pigg of Carmel, Stephanie N. Wilder (and Jon) of Bargersville, and Courtney C. Doll of Fort Wayne; and seven great-grandchildren, Marissa A. Pigg, Michael A. Pigg, Christian F.S. Wilder, Lena R. K. Wilder, Logan K. Pigg, Bailey Mae Pigg and Jason D. Dorsett.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at Banks & Brust Funeral Home  in Sullivan, with Terry Norris officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery, in rural Carlisle. Friends may call at Banks & Brust today from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations in her name may be made to the First Baptist Church in Sullivan, or a charity of your choice.
