Betty L. Swearingen

BRAZIL — Betty L. Swearingen, 83, of Brazil, passed away Nov. 16, 2013, at the home of her daughter surrounded by her family. She was born June 13, 1930, in Brazil, the daughter of Paul Thomas Riley and Gladys Marie Nicoson Riley. She graduated from Brazil High School, class of 1948. On June 19, 1948, she was united in marriage to Ralph Franklin Swearingen Sr. Together they raised their family in Clay County.

Betty worked for the Terre Haute Gas Corporation for 21 years. She was a member of the Nazarene Church. She and Ralph enjoyed travel in the United States and in Europe. Following his death in 2001, Betty traveled to Florida with her sisters and family several times. While she was living in Park Place, she enjoyed the Sunday Concerts in the Park and enjoyed Senior Swim with friends. Betty also was always ready to shop. She didn’t need a big reason, she just loved to shop.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Swearingen; and two sisters, Wilma Jean Riley and Rita Jo Pyle.

Survivors include her children, Paulette Gaskill (Steve Snyder), and Frank Swearingen, all of Brazil, and Joni French (Lonnie) of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Doug Gaskill, Robbie Gaskill, Jeff Gaskill, Shelly Lambert (Dusty Moore), Brison Swearingen (Ashley), Christian French, Matt French (Emily), and Aimee Carrel (Mike); great-grandchildren, Jordan Gaskill, Alex Gaskill, Kameran Gaskill, Taylor Gaskill, Riley Gaskill, Parker Lambert, and Madison Swearingen; sisters, Lois Eaglin Casassa and husband Jimmy Dom Casassa and Linda Sue Tipton; several nieces, nephews, and other extended family. The family would also like to include and thank special caregivers, Odena Houk and Jody Layne.

Services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at French Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Bridgewater officiating. Burial will follow at Bee Ridge Cemetery.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and again Wednesday prior to services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bee Ridge Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Light a candle in her memory at:
