Elizabeth Margaret Angelina Szabo Leusing

Elizabeth Leusing, 91, went through the heavenly gates Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, to be with her granddaughter, Amy Marie Spivey, who went to heaven Aug. 5, 2012. She passed away at her daughter and son-in-law’s home, where she had been living for the last 31⁄2 years. Elizabeth was born in Terre Haute, on March 15, 1922, to Michael Szabo and Mary Kosarko Szabo, who were from Budapest, Hungary.

Elizabeth was known as “Betty” by her friends, where she worked at Miller Parrott Baking Company and Chesty Foods. She was a hard worker and very devoted to her children. She was her 19 year old son’s caregiver when he was in an auto accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Some thought she should have put him in a nursing home but she took care of him at home while she worked and because of her love and devotion he was able to learn how to drive a car and become independent. Her oldest daughter Joan went to heaven at the age of 56. She suffered from schizophrenia at the age of 16 after the death of our father. She never was able to accept his death and never recovered from that. Mother took care of her and all her needs while she worked.

Mother suffered from rheumatoid arthritis that was very hard on her and she could no longer work. She never drove a car. She loved to get out and walk when she could. She lived in her home until 2010, when she fell and needed a partial hip replacement. She reminisced about when she was young and danced at the Hungarian Lodge in her Hungarian dress with all her family. She always had a sense of humor, her doctors would smile when she would say something funny to them and every visit she did. She loved dancing, soap operas, game shows, playing solitaire and working in her yard. She also loved spending time with her cats, Sweetie and Angel, who were her children.

Mother often talked about the love of her life, John Leusing, who passed away in 1965, at the age of 46. They divorced after 28 years of marriage but she still talked about him and how he was a great father to their four children.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William Szabo; sisters,  Mary Ferency, Rose Ferency, Clara Foncannon, and Julia Lanke; nephews, John Ferency, Danny, David, Ron Foncannon. and John Lanke; and cousins, Elizabeth and Mary Chervenko. Elizabeth was the baby in her family.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughters, Margaret Leusing, Mary Ann and special son-in-law, Joseph Carter of Terre Haute; son, John Leusing of Topock, Ariz.; grandsons, Brent Barnhart and Randy Spivey; great-grandson, Kyle Barnhart and his mother Deanna Foxworthy; special friend of the family, Debbie Dowden; granddaughter, Sheila Church and her four children; nephews, Dick Ferency, and Bill and Mike Lanke; special cousin, Mary Helen Watson and Alex and Joe Kosarko and John Chervenko.

Per Elizabeth’s request, after her granddaughter’s death, she expressed that she didn’t want visitation or services. Her request will be honored.

Memorial contributions in Elizabeth’s memory can be sent for Kyle Barnhart’s Education Fund to any First Financial Bank, Hungarian Lodge, 2049 N. 22nd St., Tribune Star Christmas Basket, 222 S. 7th St., Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 400 8th Ave., St. Ann’s Clinic, 1436 Locust St., or to the charity of your choice.
