Billy G. Brant

TERRE HAUTE — Billy G. Brant, 83, of Terre Haute, died at 6:02 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, in the Emergency Room of Union Hospital Terre Haute. He was born March 12, 1930, in Otter Creek Township, Vigo County, Ind., to the late William F. Brant and Bertha Summitt Brant.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor A. Stokes Brant; one son, Jonathan S. Brant; one brother, Robert Brant of Terre Haute; one sister, Mary Brant Miller and her husband Robert of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers-in-law, Ernest Stokes of Leslie, Mo., and Louie E. Stokes of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Miriam Zwitter of Chattanooga; and several nieces, nephews and their children. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Brant Derr; and stepmother, Ethel Brant.

He was a farmer in Parke County for 50 years. He attended both Otter Creek and Rosedale schools. He enrolled at Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo., and graduated with a BA degree in Bible in 1960. In 1964, he received a MA degree at New York University in elementary education. He taught 5th grade at Rosedale Public School for 20 years and retired in 1990. He was a home builder and land developer in both Vigo and Parke Counties. He was converted to believe in God and Christ the Messiah in 1947 at the Joppa Baptist Church. Billy put his beliefs in practice as a Sunday School teacher, church attendance and in sharing irrevocable trust to the American Bible Society and the United Jewish Appeal. He was a member of Barbour Avenue United Methodist Church, Terre Haute. Billy traveled to the Holy Land (Israel and Jordan) on four occasions during the past 25 years. He and the tour groups followed in the footsteps of Moses in Jordan and Christ and the Prophets in Israel.

His final resting place will be at Calvary Cemetery with a headstone inscribed “Risen with God.” Services will be Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. in Barbour Avenue United Methodist Church, 1401 Barbour Ave., Terre Haute, with the Rev. Bob Roush officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Terre Haute. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cottrell-Gooch Funeral Home, 287 N. Main St., in Rosedale and one hour before the service at the church. Memorials should friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Barbour Avenue United Methodist Church, 1401 Barbour Avenue, Terre Haute, IN 47804.
