Rod A. Handy
BRAZIL — Rod A. Handy, 59, of Brazil, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Terre Haute, on Jan. 10, 1949, to Jack and Willa (Johnson) Handy. He graduated from Wiley High School in 1967. Following high school, he served his country in the U.S. Navy, during the Vietnam War, on the USS Albany from 1967 until 1971. Upon his return, he attended Indiana State University for two years. During this time, he worked for Haag Drug Store in Terre Haute, as the store manager. Later he worked for Furrows Lumber Company for 17 years, then Great Dane Trailer Company. He began The Paw Patch Professional Grooming Shop in Staunton in 1996 and retired from there in 2002. Rod and Karen were married July 19, 2001.
He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He enjoyed watching his favorite team the Chicago Bears and NASCAR Racing. He loved animals including his two special cats, Emmett and Mason. He also bowled on several leagues in Terre Haute and Brazil. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter 972, Riley American Legion Post 328 and Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Willa Handy.
Survivors include his wife Karen; daughter, Emily Jane Cottee and husband Brian of Terre Haute; children by marriage Charles, Seanna and fiancé Josh Fagg and Bradley; grandchildren, Carli and Kyle Cottee of Terre Haute and Corbin Fagg; sisters, Debra Dyer and fiancé Bob Wilkin of Chicago and Theresa Wendland of Redmond, Wash.; one special niece, Cary Ann Long and husband Jason of Terre Haute; great-niece, Daley Lohrmann; great-nephew, Dru Long; special Aunt Wanda of Brazil; sister-in-law, Katrina Saults and husband Harry of Terre Haute; uncle Ronnie and aunt Pat of Terre Haute; as well as several cousins and extended family members.
Services will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel, in Brazil, Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at 7 p.m. with military services to follow. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 3 to 7 p.m., casual dress has been requested. At Rods request, cremation services have been planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the organization of your choice or to Rod Handy Fund c/o First Financial Bank 2180 E. National Ave. Brazil, IN 47834.
