BRAZIL — James Shorter, 49, Brazil, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2008, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born May 10, 1959, in Brazil, to Robert and Mary “Dixie” (Davis) Shorter. He graduated from Brazil High School in 1977. Jim served his country in the U.S. Army and Army National Guard for more than 20 years. During his military career, he worked as a truck driver and served on a competition rifle team. He also worked at Indiana Department of Corrections in Putmanville, as a prison guard for 19 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and collecting coins.
He is survived by his mother, Dixie Shorter; two sons, Matthew Shorter and wife Sarah and Raymond Shorter; grandson, Levi Shorter; two brothers, David Shorter and wife Brenda and Mark Shorter and wife Vicki; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his father; and two nephews, Joshua Shorter and Chad Shorter.
Services will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave., in Brazil, Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at 1 p.m. with Pastors Greg Puttmann and Tim Voll officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home Monday, July 21, 2008, from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
