Dean Eugene Nicoson
Dean Eugene Nicoson, 74, lifelong resident of Terre Haute, died at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2008, in Union Hospital ICU due to complications from an existing heart condition. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle who developed a timeless circle of friendship with those around him. He was born on Feb. 25, 1934, the second son of Zenis and Mary Brown Nicoson. Zenis was fire chief for the city of Terre Haute. The six Nicoson boy, Ronnie, Dean, Pat, Skip, Barry and Steve, were well-known Terre Haute athletes. Dean played football and golf for Garfleld High School, graduating in 1952. He continued to be an avid golfer during his lifetime
Dean married Barbara Jean Taylor on Aug. 16, 1952, and they would have celebrated their 56-year anniversary next month. They were blessed with two sons, Kenneth Dean Nicoson and Jeffrey Lee Nicoson. Jeffrey passed away June 3, 1978. Dean retired from the Terre Haute Fire Department in 1978 after 20 years of dedicated service. He also was a pipefitter with Local 157 and he retired from there in 1990. Barbara and Dean also managed J.C. Spence's Storage Center on Highway 46 from 1990 to 2004.
Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara; his son, Kenneth Dean Nicoson and his wife Cherryl; grandchildren, David and his wife Laura, Brian, Michael and his girlfriend A.J., and Katie and her boyfriend Nate; great-grandchildren, Nate, Abbygayle, Caitlyn and Caleb. He was awaiting a new great-granddaughter, Addison. Also his brothers, Barry Nicoson and his wife Nancy and Steve Nicoson and his wife Sharon; sisters-in-law, Nadine Nicoson, Carolyn Nicoson, Charlotte and Gene Shike, and Loretta and Roy Lang. He was a favored relative to his many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey; his parents, Zenis and Mary Nicoson; brothers, Ronnie, Norman (Skip), Keith (Pat); aunt Bessie Lancaster; and in-laws, Kenneth and Mary Taylor.
He was a member of Terre Haute Masonic Lodge 19 Free & Accepted Masons, Terre Haute Valley Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite, Retired Fireman’s Association, Rockville Elks Lodge 2471, Marine Corps League, and Hoosier Hills Golf Club.
Funeral services and interment will be 12 noon Tuesday, July 8, 2008, in Roselawn Memorial Park, 7500 N. Clinton Street, with Pastor Bernie Jackson officiating. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to service time on Tuesday. If friends so desire, contributions may be made to Terre Haute Police and Firemen Historical Museum, 1728 South 8th St., Terre Haute, IN 47802 or to Hoosier Hills Golf Course in Cory.
