Katherine E. Poland, 93, of Terre Haute, formerly of Robinson, Ill., died at 7:38 a.m. June 6, 2009, at Burgin Manor in Olney, Ill. She was born May 1, 1916, in Birds, Lawerence County, Ill., the daughter of Fred Schoffstall and Molly Davis Schoffsstall. She had worked as a clerk in her family grocery, Poland’s Grocery, in Robinson and had also been a clerk in a retail department store. She also was a member of the Terre Haute Memorial Methodist Church.
Katherine married John A. Poland on Oct. 18, 1937, and he survives. She was a loving wife and grandmother. She is also survived by her grandson and his wife, John M. and Becky Poland of Sacramento, Calif.; her granddaughter and her husband, Jamie and Gerald Garcia of Albuquerque, N.M.; four great-grandchildren, Stephanie Poland, John Drew Poland, Tiara Dominquez, Britany Garcia; one great-great-grandchild, Brooklyn Dominquez; her sister, Velma Buss of Olney; and her daughter-in-law, Maureen Poland, who has been a daughter to her of Albuquerque, N.M.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her son John Irwin Poland.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson, Ill. Mytron Lisby is in charge of services. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today and until service time on Tuesday. Burial is in the Robinson New Cemetery.
