11 Valley organizations get grants from Rotary

TERRE HAUTE — Financial support to help residents of the Wabash Valley came to 11 local non-profit organizations Tuesday when they received grants from Rotary Club of Terre Haute.

From counseling services to youth, a variety of programs will benefit from the $7,500 given through the Rotary Club Foundation, which is supported by gifts from Rotarians.

“Today is one way we can give back to our community,” said David Bolk, chairman of the Rotary grants committee.

23 grant applications totaling $23,000 in funding requests were the most ever received.

“Obviously, the need outweighs the grants,” Bolk said, noting that some of the recipients are organizations that have been supported in the past, while others are new to receive the Rotary grants.

Organizations receiving grants, and the programming supported, are:

• Wabash Valley Health Center, also known as St. Ann’s Clinic, with $1,000 to provide eye glasses to clients after they have been examined and prescribed by UAP clinic.

• West Vigo Community Center, $1,000 to purchase a replacement gas furnace for the gymnasium.

• Wabash Valley Community Foundation/United Way, $1,000 to provide one of six seminars for board members of nonprofit organizations and provide training on management and professional development for those organizations.

• Vigo County Education Foundation, $750 to fund a career technology experience project at Terre Haute North Vigo High School.

• Terre Haute Area Meals on Wheels, $740 to become a packaging partner to help pay for costs of packaging meals provided by volunteers to elderly and handicapped homebound individuals.

• Catholic Charities, $644.98 to purchase a computer with a touchscreen monitor for preschool students.

• Vigo County Branch of YMCA of Clay County, $500 to fund an increase of STEM education at the Vigo County Y summer camp.

• Terre Haute Woman’s Club, $500 to purchase shoes for needy students in Vigo County schools and deliver the shoes via the shoe bus.

• FSA Counseling Center, $500 to provide child care service so participants may attend weekly group services for victimized women.

• Vigo County CASA Kids, $500 to provide enrichment opportunities such as dance and tumbling lessons and recreational sports for children who have been abused and neglected.

• League of Terre Haute, $364 to provide clothing assistance, dental supplies and emergency dental services to children in need in Vigo County.
