Injured man found along I-70; police investigating

TERRE HAUTE — Police say an investigation continues  regarding an injured man found early Saturday alongside Interstate 70.

According to a news release issued by the Indiana State Police, David E. Halcomb, 18, of Clayton in Hendricks County, was found lying in a watery ditch about 50 feet south of the interstate, along the eastbound lanes near the 12-mile marker. Passerby reported seeing the man about 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

Troopers reported Halcomb was both injured and intoxicated at the scene, and he was treated there by members of the Riley Fire/Rescue Department and Trans Care Ambulance Service before being taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was later transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of a lower left leg fracture, the release states. Hospital staff reported Halcomb to be in fair condition Saturday afternoon.

Halcomb’s blood alcohol content was 0.12 percent the release stated, and investigators report he was believed to have been one of two passengers in a vehicle driven a third individual. The group was believed to have been traveling back to Hendricks County after an evening in Terre Haute. During the return trip, investigators report an argument is believed to have begun inside the vehicle which resulted in Halcomb being left in the ditch.

According to the release, investigators were still unsure whether Halcomb was forced from the vehicle, or exited on his own while the vehicle was in motion. Troopers have reportedly identified the other two occupants in the vehicle but have not released their names.
