Babysitter charged with stealing electronics

TERRE HAUTE — A babysitter who allegedly stole a family’s electronics has a July 9 trial date.

Robert Joseph Busiere, 34, of Terre Haute, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Thursday where he was charged with four counts of class-C felony criminal confinement and with class-D felony theft. He also faces a habitual offender charge.

According to an investigation by Terre Haute Police, a parent hired Busiere to babysit his four children in November. After the parent left his home, Busiere allegedly gave the children — ranging from age 13 to 9 — some candy and $5 and asked them to stay in a bedroom while he had a friend come over.

When the children tried to exit the bedroom about an hour later, they found the door blocked by a heavy object. The police report states that the children were able to force open the door in time to see Busiere leaving the residence in a truck with other people. The truck contained several items taken from the house, including televisions, laptop and desktop computers, and digital cameras.

When the parent returned home and learned of the theft, he contacted police. At least one television was later recovered after being pawned.

Busiere was arrested Jan. 16 on a parole violation. He has a lengthy criminal history that includes convictions for theft.

A pretrial hearing date is set for June 17.
