Two from Northern Indiana arrested on drug charge

TERRE HAUTE — A northern Indiana couple has been arrested on suspicion of dealing psychedelic mushrooms out of a recreational vehicle that they traveled in to Vigo County.

Michael Baughman, 36, and Mercy Ayaaba, 27, were arrested Tuesday evening by officers from the Vigo County Drug Task Force, who acted on a confidential tip that an RV pulling a pickup truck would be arriving at a parking lot on Indiana 46 to make illegal drug transactions.

Detective Sgt. Doug Bensinger of the Terre Haute Police Department testified in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Wednesday that police spotted a vehicle matching the reported description and saw the RV fail to signal a turn into the parking lot. The vehicle was stopped, and a K-9 officer indicated the presence of drugs in the vehicle.

Bensinger said that officers found four pounds of psychedelic mushrooms as well as three pounds of liquid marijuana inside the RV.

Officers arrested Baughman and Ayaaba. A toddler with them was taken into custody by Child Protective Services.

Baughman and Ayaaba were both arrested on suspicion of dealing a controlled substance, maintaining a common nuisance and neglect of a dependent.

Judge John Roach set a hearing date for the couple for Monday, and set their bail at $50,000 each.
