Civil rights leaders hope to bring a new approach to ongoing issues as a new term of office begins.
The Greater Terre Haute Branch of the NAACP voted in officers for another term Saturday, with polls open at the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church from 2 to 6 p.m. All candidates were uncontested for their offices.
Valerie Hart-Craig was elected to a second two-year term as president of the branch.
The organization, she said, will be changing its structure slightly as it approaches the issues of equality from the perspective of multiple “game changers.” In the past, the branch tackled projects with the use of several mini-committees, but going forward, the team will address larger social issues including economic sustainability, education, health, public safety and criminal justice, and voting rights and political representation.
Tackling environmental issues will be a little new to the NAACP, but it’s an area that offers a number of potential partnerships with other organizations, Hart-Craig said.
“And that’s something I want to learn more about myself,” she said.
The local branch has just under 200 members, but more than paid memberships, Hart-Craig said she hopes to see more individual activity.
“That way they can help spread the knowledge about the organization to people who don’t know about it, or are on the fence,” she said.
The local branch meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Monday of each month in the Vigo County Public Library.
Students from Indiana State University are building a website for the organization, and the group can be found on Facebook as the Greater Terre Haute NAACP.
Hart-Craig said the public is always welcome to visit the meetings and participate.
“Please come out and see us,” she said.
