State Police: fewer diesel event citations

13 arrested for driving under influence

TERRE HAUTE — While down from the previous year, Indiana State Police issued 538 traffic citations and 669 traffic warnings during the two-day Scheid Diesel Extravaganza at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds.

Indiana State Police Putnamville District used unmarked cars, such as high performance Ford Mustangs and pickup trucks, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and marked patrol cars to conduct patrols along state highways and city streets.

State police report 13 arrests for driving under the influence; five motor vehicle accidents investigated; 47 criminal arrests; 258 seat belt citations; 123 portable breath tests administered; and 116 truck citations.

“We had 55 officers out on the first night and 50 on the second night, with many officers working both nights,” said ISP Sgt. Joe Watts.

“It was visibly better this year with the driving behaviors much safer and much slower. There was not drag races and running over concrete medians, and we did not have the black smoke problem as in the past,” Watts said.

“We want people to come to Terre Haute to this event, but do so in a safe manner and I think [event attendees] are getting the message that we will be out on patrols,” Watts said.

The numbers are down compared with 2012. In that year, state police issued 775 traffic citations and 691 traffic warnings; had 27 driving under the influence arrests; one motor vehicle accident investigated; 23 criminal arrests; 197 seatbelt citations; 187 portable breath tests administered; and 48 truck citations.

The numbers from state police are in addition to the Indiana Excise Police, which reported its officers arrested 254 people on 305 charges in connection with the extravaganza. Of those, 105 people were arrested on suspicion of underage possession or consumption of alcohol, including 21 juveniles younger than 18.

Excise police arrested 12 adults on suspicion of furnishing or providing alcohol to minors.
