Saturday afternoon accident closes I-70 in Clay County

One man flown to Indy hospital

TERRE HAUTE — A single-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon left one man injured and closed down eastbound traffic on Interstate 70 in Clay County for about an hour and a half, authorities said.

James Holmes, 70, of Springfield, Va., was pinned in the vehicle after it struck a guardrail and flipped on its roof, police said. Holmes had to be removed from the vehicle by first responders, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

Holmes had several lacerations on his head, arms and legs, but was alert and conscious, police said. He was transported to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis by Air Evac, police said.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call was made about 1:54 p.m. Saturday reporting a reckless driver traveling east on Interstate 70 at mile marker 20. Later, another call was placed stating that the vehicle had struck a guardrail and flipped on its roof, police said.

Holmes allegedly told police that he had a medical condition and could not get off the road, causing the accident, police said.

The Indiana State Police, Clay County Search and Rescue, Jackson Township Fire Department, Posey Township Fire Department, Transcare and Air Evac assisted at the scene.
