TERRE HAUTE —
The identity of a man who police say fatally shot himself late Saturday has been released.
Isaiah Peters, 26, of Terre Haute, apparently shot himself with his own gun, according to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.
A complete autopsy report is expected in about six weeks, Chief Deputy Clark Cottom said. The shooting has been declared accidental, he said.
A preliminary autopsy report from the Marion County Coroner’s Office stated that Peters’ injury was consistent with witness statements about the incident, which occurred around 10:43 p.m. Saturday at an apartment in Raintree Village, located just off Evans Avenue in northern Vigo County.
Cottom told the Tribune-Star that Peters owned the .40-caliber Ruger, a semi-automatic pistol, with which he was shot.
Cottom said that the apartment occupant told police that he and Peters had been “fooling around” outdoors shooting the gun into the ground. They had been consuming alcohol. They went inside the apartment, where the shooting occurred.
Peters was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
