Gasoline spill contained

25 to 30 gallons spill at Thorntons on Third Street

TERRE HAUTE — The smell of gasoline filled the air at the intersection of Third and Voorhees streets in Terre Haute on Wednesday evening after gas spilled within the property of Thorntons gas station.

An estimated 25 to 30 gallons of gas spilled in part of the business property after gas started spewing out of a pump while employees performed maintenance on it, Terre Haute Fire Department Battalion Chief Ron Steiner said at the scene.

There was no danger to the public or the environment, Steiner said.

The machine holds pumps one and two on the corner of the property closest to Voorhees Street. No gas spilled onto the surrounding streets, and the spill was contained within the property of the business.

Some gas got into the storm drain and City of Terre Haute Wastewater Utility was notified and will take samples of the water and do tests, Steiner said.

The Terre Haute Fire Department responded to the incident, which occurred around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Steiner said firefighters used “Speedy-Dry,” an oil absorbent for the clean up.

Thorntons was still open for business during the spill and cleanup.
