2 bodies found under Vigo bridge

Police await autopsies today to decide on investigation

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Detectives on Sunday continued to investigate the deaths of two persons whose bodies were found late Saturday night in northwestern Vigo County.

“We think we have an idea of what may have happened, and we think we have an idea of who the victims are,” Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts said Sunday.

The partially decomposed bodies appeared to be those of an adult male and adult female of middle age or older, Watts said, adding that the persons appeared to have been deceased for a few days.

The bodies were found on private property near U.S. 150 and Pennington Road in Fayette Township. Police said the bodies were found under a small bridge at a driveway that led to an abandoned residence on West Pennington Road.

Persons riding all-terrain vehicles in the area found the bodies at about 10 p.m. Saturday, police said, in a location about 150 yards south of Pennington Road.

The male and female may have been in a relationship, and there is no threat to public safety, police said.

“We feel that it is an isolated case. We don’t have any expectation of danger to the public,” Watts said.

However, police are waiting for the autopsies — to be conducted today by Dr. Roland Kohr at Terre Haute Regional Hospital — to confirm those ideas or send police in a different direction, he said.

Vigo County Coroner Dr. Susan Amos said preliminary results of the autopsies may be released today.

A white 1997 Ford pickup that police believe belongs to one of the victims, was found at the scene within steps of the victims, Watts said.
