Police seek help in solving homicide as anniversary approaches

TERRE HAUTE — Tips in an unsolved homicide are still being sought, as the one-year anniversary approaches in the death of a Sullivan County man.

On Dec. 8, 2012, 85-year-old Lowell R. Badger was found dead in his rural home in the 10000 block of West County Road 350 North in Sullivan County. Investigators determined that he died between 8 p.m. Dec. 7 and 9:23 a.m. Dec. 8 during a home invasion. He was found dead on his bedroom floor with a gunshot wound.

A reward of $38,000 has been established and is available for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Badger’s death.

No arrests have been made, and police are seeking information from anyone who may recognize items taken from the Badger residence during the burglary. Items taken include Badger’s safe, light to medium dark gray, measuring 231⁄2 inches tall, 17 inches deep and 17 inches wide. It was in pristine condition and manufactured by John D. Brush and Co. Also taken was a black 46-inch Sony Bravia LCD television.

ISP Sgt. Joe Watts told the Tribune-Star that the safe is heavy, and that it would have been easier for two people to carry the safe.

The public is asked to report any possible sightings of such a safe, which could possibly turn up at resale shops, yard sales, salvage yards or discarded in a remote area.

The Indiana State Police homepage at www.in.gov/isp has a dedicated section concerning the Lowell R. Badger homicide.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact First Sgt. Jeff Hearon or Detective Tom Hanks at the Putnamville ISP Post at 765-653-4114, or the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department at 812-268-4044.

Tips can also be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers at 812-238 STOP or 800-222-TIPS, or online at www.wvcrimestoppers.org.
