City man who led police on chase still loose

TERRE HAUTE — Authorities are still looking for a man who led police on a lengthy chase across the city Monday afternoon.

Anthony Piper, 37, of Terre Haute, fled from police in an SUV when police attempted to serve him with a warrant for escape and probation violation.

Piper fled from police and headed north from about 23rd Street and Maple Avenue in a red Ford Explorer. He drove up to the northern part of the city and then headed back south on U.S. 41. The tires of his vehicle were flattened by stop sticks placed into the roadway ahead of him at U.S. 41 and the Interstate 70 overpass, said John Plasse, chief of police. The stop sticks were placed ahead of Piper by an officer with the Indiana State University Police Department who was assisting in the chase, Plasse said.

Despite the stop sticks flattening one or more of his tires, Piper continued to drive. His abandoned vehicle was later discovered west of Honey Creek Mall. He had gotten away from the vehicle on foot, Plasse said.

Piper has prior criminal convictions, including theft, possession of methamphetamine and resisting law enforcement.

No one was injured in Tuesday’s chase, Plasse said.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of Piper, please call the Terre Haute Police Department at 812-238-1661.
