Leaf pickup ahead of schedule; city says it will return to areas skipped

TERRE HAUTE — Leaf pickup from the Terre Haute Street Department has skipped ahead of its scheduled vacuuming/ pick up sites, hitting some areas where homeowners were not prepared for the collection.

“We got ahead of schedule,” said Brad Miller, Terre Haute’s street commissioner. “Sometimes that happens when the leaves are not down yet in an area or people don’t have their leaves out.”

The city department had posted on its website that vacuuming/pick up of leaves would occur Nov. 12-15 in the area, east to west, “from [U.S.] Highway 41 to Fruitridge Avenue and, north to south, from Haythorne Avenue to Fort Harrison Road.” However, street crews were south of Fort Harrison Road on Wednesday.

“We will backtrack after the cold snap and more leaves come down,” Miller said. “We will hit that area again and then move farther south. The [website] will be updated on Friday for what we will be doing next week,” Miller said.

The city posts leaf pickup schedules at www.terre

haute.in.gov. Click on a link for leaf collection. The city will also contact media about the schedule, Miller said.

“Since we are ahead of the schedule, we will go back to where we didn’t get and continue on through where we are this week and do that area again and continue south,” Miller said. “People should not panic. When we go back and start over, we will make that whole sweep again.”
