City receives funds for stun guns

TERRE HAUTE — Police in Terre Haute will soon have more electronic stun guns and related equipment thanks to a federal grant.

U.S. Attorney Joseph Hogsett was in Terre Haute Friday to present a check for $15,083, as part of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, a program to help local law enforcement across the country.

The city has received federal funding through this or a related grant for many years, bringing well over $100,000 to the police department and tens of thousands of dollars to the Vigo County Drug Court, according to information provided by the city.

In this case, the grant funding will purchase eight Tasers with eight cameras, eight holsters and 20 cartridges, city officials said at the grant presentation at the Terre Haute Police headquarters.

The fact that Terre Haute has received the grant year after year “speaks volumes” about the “quality of [the] police force,” Hogsett said.

Mayor Duke Bennett, who accepted the grant with Marc Eldred, assistant police chief, said the grant also reflects well on the police staff who make sure they apply for all the grants they can.

“This goes a long way toward equipping our officers to give them the tools they need to do their job,” Bennett said.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant requires that the funding be shared with another agency, Eldred said. As in years past, this year’s grant will be shared with the Drug Court, which will receive $2,634.85 of the total funding, Bennett said.

The Drug Court will use the money to supplement the coordinator’s salary and help with other expenses, such as testing and education, Eldred said.
