Sullivan County ambulance overturns on Interstate 70

Two EMTs receive minor injuries

TERRE HAUTE — Two Sullivan County emergency medical technicians were treated and released from Terre Haute Regional Hospital after their ambulance rolled over in the median of Interstate 70, about 1 mile east of the Indiana 46 exit on Wednesday afternoon.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts said Jessica Boyle, 25, of Sullivan, was driving the 2000 Freightliner ambulance westbound on the interstate.

The ambulance, Watts said, went off the interstate onto a grassy median and began to rotate clockwise, rolling over multiple times before coming to rest on the driver’s side, about 200 feet from where it left the westbound lane.

Watts, at the scene, said Boyle told police that the wind pushed her vehicle into loose white rock, causing her to lose control.

The passenger in the ambulance was Kindra West, 27, of Jasonville.

The two EMTs were returning from Indianapolis after they had transferred a medical patient. There were no patients in the ambulance at the time of the accident.

Both Boyle and West were able to free themselves from the overturned ambulance.

The National Weather Service reported winds near Terre Haute were from the northwest at a sustained 18 mph with gusts up to 25 mph at about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Police responded to the accident at 2:48 p.m. In addition to state police, the Riley Fire Department, Honey Creek Fire Department, Terre Haute Police Department and Trans Care Ambulance responded to the accident.

Traffic was slowed along the interstate near the accident for about one hour to allow for cleanup.
