Some Vigo air fails to meet EPA standards: Duke Energy to close four of five aging units

TERRE HAUTE — Duke Energy still plans to close four of the five power units at the Wabash River Station, a spokesperson said Wednesday about the only coal-fired power plant in Vigo County.

In a note to Terre Haute business leaders in September 2011, Duke said “because some of our plants are aging and dependent on coal, we expect to retire some generating units.” The Wabash River Station is located north of West Terre Haute.

Duke spokesperson Angeline Protogere on Wednesday said “we expect to retire the four units” — that is, Wabash River Station units 2, 3, 4 and 5 — “by 2015.”

Protogere said the company is also exploring what to do with the other unit it owns, unit 6.

“The other unit [6] we are considering converting to cleaner burning natural gas,” she said.

Unit 1 at the Wabash River Station is owned by the Wabash Valley Power Association and SG Solutions. According to a 2011 Duke Energy message to the Tribune-Star, unit 1 is “powered by the synthesis gas produced at the adjacent gasification plant. It would not be affected by any decision we make.”

Duke is Indiana’s largest electric supplier. According to a July 2013 release, Duke provided approximately 6,900 megawatts of owned electric capacity to approximately 790,000 customers.

The company, headquarted in North Carolina, says that it has invested approximately $2.8 billion since 1990 in federally mandated pollution control measures statewide.
