Tribune-Star staff report
TERRE HAUTE —
Three Vigo County schools have been named among 313 Indiana 4-Star schools for the 2011-2012 academic year, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz announced Monday.
The schools are Terre Haute South Vigo High School; Dixie Bee Elementary School; and Fayette Elementary School.
“This is the first time I can ever remember that we have had a high school listed as a four-star school,” said Danny Tanoos, superintendent of the Vigo County School Corp.
“It goes back to the leadership of our school board to provide us opportunities for innovative and creative teaching,” Tanoos said.
In order to achieve this designation, a school must be in the top 25th percentile of schools in ISTEP+ testing results.
In May 2011, Joseph Botros, a student at Terre Haute South Vigo High School, was named 2011 Indiana Mr. Science. It was the third year in a row that Terre Haute South had been recognized. Sachin Dillip Shinde was named “Indiana Mr. Math” the previous two years.
“Winning this award required excellent work by teachers, administrators, students and parents throughout the year and on behalf of the entire Indiana Department of Education, I send them my sincere congratulations,” Ritz said in a news release.
